Castillo de San Marcos National Monument has been closely intertwined with the city and the neighboring structures of St. Augustine, which served as the city’s outer defenses – Fort Mose to the north and Fort Matanzas to the south. The Castillo and the town serve as outstanding reminders of the might of the early Spanish empire in the New World. Numerous historic events have taken place here, including the imprisonment of Seminole tribe leader Chief Osceola after he was captured in 1837. Constructed with the use of coquina shells, the fort is virtually indestructible – limestone comprised of broken sea shells and coral, the walls of the fortress remained impenetrable during 300 years of enemy shelling and pounding by violent storms.
The Nights of Lights dazzles town as some 3 million lights adorn each corner of the historic district for 2 months. The festival traces its origin to the Spanish tradition of displaying a white candle in the window during the Christmas holidays.
